The design of a £3.5million scheme of high-end luxury apartments on the North Parade in Whitley Bay has been put forward for a public consultation with the local community.
The site is currently occupied by the 42nd Street pub, a former local nightlife spot that closed its doors in May after a local developer, North Eastern Holdings Ltd purchased the site. Having commissioned GRADONARCHITECTURE to provide the design of the scheme, the proposals will be put forward in a public consultation in order to open the plans to the local community.
Gradon’s design proposes a luxury development of 22 apartments and 22 parking spaces. Each apartment comprises of two bedrooms, both en suites, a contemporary open plan living space, with select apartments also having a terraced outdoor space providing views onto the Whitley Bay seafront. The surrounding context of Whitley Bay has also been considered in the design and materials and facades have been chosen to compliment nearby buildings such as The Rex Hotel.
Architectural Director Chris Allan, who has been a key member of the design team said,
“We are pleased to announce that the go ahead for a public consultation has been given for the existing 42nd Street Public House site as this will give the Whitley Bay residents chance to view the proposals and provide their comments to the project team. Throughout the design process, we have understood the vision of our client and engaged with North Tyneside Council through a pre-application process to produce the final proposed designs. The public consultation will give the local community an opportunity to review the proposed designs and have any questions about the development answered. The proposed project is set to further diversify the residential accommodation currently on offer within Whitley Bay and will become an even more desirable place to live thanks to the added benefits of the wider regeneration in the area.”
Newcastle based planning consultants Lichfields will submit the planning application on behalf of North Eastern Holdings Ltd. Michael Hepburn, Senior Director at Lichfields said,
“The redevelopment of this vacant brownfield site provides an ideal opportunity to provide new homes in a high quality building. The proposal continues the successful regeneration of Whitley Bay’s seafront which has been led by the Council’s redevelopment of the Spanish City and the seafront promenade.”
The Whitley Bay proposals follow a successful 2019 for Gradon who are delivering a number of private and public projects across the North East, including the Newcastle Energy Centre, Haydon Bridge High School and the Fishtank leisure hub in Newton Aycliffe. Following their expansion into a new Middlesbrough Studio, the practice is keen to further their presence in the North East as well as overseas having won a number of international projects in Mongolia and Central Asia.
The drop-in event will be held at Spanish City, Spanish City Plaza, Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, NE26 1BG on Thursday 23rd January 2020 between 2:30pm and 6:30pm.
